10 Quick Tips To Declutter Your House

When it comes to clutter, there are two kinds of people in the world. The keepers - those that save everything (just in case they might need to use it one day) - and the tossers - those that get rid of nearly everything (and suffer the consequences when they have thrown out something they do need later).

Often, it seems they marry each other. I could write a book on that!

By writing this article, it may seem as if I’m trying to ruin my business; however, the fact is that eventually we all buy and/or collect more things than can fit into the size of house we can afford. If you can delay the inevitable garage sale or storage space rental for a couple of years - well, why not save your money?

To tell you the truth, I think we (most of us, anyway) will continue to acquire things and eventually run out of space. I think it’s safe to say that the storage business will be around for a long time.

So, without further here are 10 ways you can make better use of the space in your home.

One - Use under-the-bed storage boxes or suitcases to store out-of-season clothing, blankets and linens.

Two - Use your walls for storage. Install shelving in strategic places for books, CD’s, toys, linens and towels, etc.

Three - Use stacking containers and hanging racks to get more cabinet/counter space. Can you mount small appliances under the cabinets?

Four - In the kitchen, use a ceiling rack to hang your pots and pans.

Five - Find some second hand cabinets to make extra space in your basement or garage.

Six - Design and create your own closet organizer. It could be as simple as a pair of wooden poles hanging one above the other for shorter garments.

Seven - Use stackable, rolling wire baskets inside your closets for additional drawer space.

Eight - Use racks and hooks inside closet doors to organize shoes, ties, and belts.

Nine - Buy a wardrobe for additional closet space. If you can’t afford to buy one, visit a self storage center and pick up a wardrobe moving box. They are strong and hold quite a bit.

Ten - Lastly, if none of these ideas work for you, I have one last (desperate) suggestion. Throw something out - or better yet donate it to a charity! Try the 2 year rule: if you haven’t used/needed it in two years you ARE living without it. Give yourself permission to throw it out!

By following these simple suggestions, I’m sure you’ll be able to open up our home a little more and - if you’re lucky - make room for more stuff!
