Over the years, students have come up with a variety of excuses to explain why they haven’t gotten around to studying: a favorite TV show just came on, just one more level and the galaxy will be conquered in the best video game ever, or they just plain don’t feel like it right now. While a parent can try and force their teen to sit down and ‘hit the books’, no real progress will be made if a student is truly not in the mood to study.
It may seem impossible to motivate a teen to study, but it is important to consider what environment they have readily available to them. Is the study room a place with a television or video game system? Is the computer or internet a possible distraction? What sort of lighting does the room have-is it appropriate for a study room or TV room?
Physical environment has a tremendous influence on a teenager’s motivation. A desk cluttered with books, papers, and personal effects can affect his or her sense of organization and make it much harder to concentrate. A blaring television or the drone of background conversation can also make it difficult to focus.
How can you create a successful learning environment? The initial step is getting rid of distractions. Radios and televisions should be turned off or absent and seating should be comfortable. Make sure there is plenty of light as well, as a bright room will keep a student alert and focused. A quiet room will help the student absorb as much information as possible.
If a teen’s bedroom is the best option for a study room, ensure the space used is organized and clear of any clutter. Studies have shown that kids can absorb and retain more information in an orderly environment than they can in a disorganized environment. Imagine how much easier it would be to study when papers, books, pens, and notes are readily accessible?
SuperCamp, a leading academic summer camp that teaches learning skills to kids and teens, also suggests personalizing the study space with positive affirmations. Messages such as “Everything I do deserves my best effort”, “I can learn this”, and “I believe in myself” will boost a student’s confidence and renew their motivation for learning. They also suggest making signs a joint project so that students understand that you have a genuine interest in their learning processes and academic success.
Another great way to contribute to the study environment is by playing classical music. Baroque music especially has been known to help the brain focus and access it’s most resourceful learning state. This type of music optimizes the functions of the brain that store and retrieve information, and is therefore good to have playing lightly in the background during a study session. Whatever methods are used, it is important for your kids to find the way that best matches their learning styles.
Motivation doesn’t have to be an issue when a student has everything they need to improve their study habits. Camps like SuperCamp provide students with handy tips to help them restore the drive for learning. Positive learning environments can make a significant difference in every student’s life!
