Laser eye surgery today has become a very popular operation to have indeed. As I’m sure you know by now laser eye surgery is capable of removing the need for people to wear glasses and contact lenses in many cases.

Probably one of the main reasons why this surgery is so popular, apart from the fact obviously that it can take away the need to wear glasses or contact lenses, is the fact that it is incredibly quick to have done and recovery time is normally minimal.

The majority of people out there are not aware of this, but there are actually a few different types of laser eye surgery to choose from.

For this very reason it is absolutely imperative, especially if you are considering the procedure yourself, to learn about these different types of laser eye surgery, so that you can select the particular type best suited to you and your condition.

Some of the kinds of laser eye surgery available

Radial keratotomy is a fairly basic procedure in which is involved the cutting out of spoke-like incisions into your eye with the objective of flattening its surface out.

Most of the time this kind of surgery is used in the treatment of nearsightedness. Having said that it is indeed capable of treating a whole load of different eye problems, so you would really need to consult your doctor to find out if this is the best procedure for your condition.

Lasik it’s probably one of the best-known laser eye surgeries, although its technical term Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis is probably hardly heard of at all.

In this procedure, a thin flap is made on the eye?s surface. Then a pulsing of a tightly-focused beam of light (a laser) onto the surface of the eye takes place. By carefully controlling the size and number of laser pulses, the surgeon is able to control how much of the cornea is removed.

The amount of cornea removed will vary from one procedure to another, depending on how serious your vision problem is.

But of course we don’t live in a perfect world and in what ever operation we have performed there are risks involved. In the case of laser eye surgery the most common tends to be overcorrection and under correction.

With under correction there was not enough tissue removed during the procedure, and in the case of overcorrection, there was simply too much tissue removed.

In the case of Lasik eye surgery another thing that can happen is wrinkling.

This can occur when the corneal flap has a small fold or wrinkle in it when it is replaced. Sadly this is often not noticed until it is too late. So if you are not satisfied with it afterwords you will have to have another procedure for the surgeon to attempt to fix it.

The truth is though, most people do not suffer from these problems and gain better site because of their procedure. To be sure whether or not laser eye surgery is the right thing for you, you should consult your doctor and to further research on the different procedures available.
